Why Everyone Needs To Get On Scribd

My story of Scribd

I was having a chat with a like-minded family member of mine which is rare as most friends and family are not into self-improvement or bettering themselves.

This gentleman however like me is continuously always looking to improve himself to be a bigger and better person. We often talk about various software, apps and books we’ve read when we catch up at a family gathering.

We were comparing Real books to Digital books and I’ve personally never caught onto eBooks as I like to hold the physical book when I read. Never the less, he told me he often reads in bed to which I replied, using a Kindle? He said “na man, I use this app called Scribd”. At first I was like, what kind of a weird name is that!

Immediately I mentally turned off because I didn’t want to download another app and secondly I didn’t want to use the tiny mobile screen to read books. I did however decide to download it immediately so I wont often the name as it was a tricky one to remember – Scribd.

I’ve downloaded many mobile apps in recent months to test and play around with and seriously, when I started looking into this on a train ride the following week, I was pleasantly impressed.

Explain, what is Scribd?

The easist way to explain Scribd is, it’s the Audiobook and Digital Books equivalent of Netflix.

What does that mean? It means you can stream and much content as you want each month at a flat fee but you don’t technically own the content. Same concept as Netflix right? You can watch a movie over and over again but you can’t download and keep the content on your hard-drive forever.

Like Netflix, you can download content for a short period of time using your Wi-Fi to save you your Cell-data allowance.

So why is Scribd so good?

If you’re familier with such subscription companies as Audible, you pay a monthly fee to which you are allocated a 1 credit. With that credit, you can purchase an audiobook. You can sample 3-5 minutes of the book prior to purchase but that’s it. If you decide to buy the book, you are stuck with it.

Pro Tip: Don’t buy anything books on Audible prior to checking YouTube to see if anyone has uploaded a copyright free version which you can listen to.

With Scribd, I’ve had the privilege to listen to whole chapters of a book before deciding if I’m going to finish, save it for later or just completely discard it as it got too boring or I got what I wanted from it. Within the past 2 weeks, I’ve done this on dozens of books. It’s like watching a couple of episodes from a TV series on Netflix and deciding it’s not for you and moving onto a Movie or a different show. Now I can do this with Audiobooks and eBooks. Amazing as I love to fully ‘test drive’ before investing my valuable time into pursuing a valuable content.

How does this compare cost wise?

Like I mentioned before, with such services as Audible which are no doubt fantastic, you are purchasing only 1 book per credit. Depending on where you are in the world, this can range from $10-20 dollars. Comparatively, at the time of writing this blog post, Scrib only charges $8.99 for unlimited usage. Are they any drawbacks to Scribd?

The only drawback I’ve found so far is that, once my phone locks – I can’t seem to control Scribd using my bluetooth controls on my wireless earphones. I haven’t been able to figure this out but I do intend on hitting up Scribd support to get this addressed.

All my other audio applications such as Audible and Blinkst do respond to interactions coming into from earphones. Not Scribd (yet).

This is the only drawback I’ve found so far. Other than that, I love it.

What content does Scribd have?

Truthly speaking, till today I had only used the Audiobooks and Books section. Though it had been right in front of me, I never saw the Magazine, Documents and Music Sheet. Isn’t it funny you only see what you want to see in life.

How much does Scribd cost?

You can browse around and listen to snippets of books and read sections for free. However, to get the true value of Scribd, you do need to upgrade to the premium subscription. I always say this, try before you buy. By default, Scribd give you 30 days complimentary access for you to try Scribd to all of its content for FREE!

Through my school and Uni years, I read very little. Even the mandatory reads during High School I ended up renting the movie. I can not recall a single book where I read cover to cover during my school years and Uni years. Fast forward a decade, now I read at least a book a week. In the last couple of days, I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on the first three chapters of a brand new book called, Experts Secrets by one of my favourites internet marketers; Russell Brunson. Actually, who am I kidding, Russell is the man! It’s got a very seductive subtitle – The Underground Playbook.

Even if you don’t know Russell Brunson, you may have heard the guy who wrote his forward. Actually, I’d be very surprised if you’re reading this and you haven’t heard of Robert Kiyosaki. This is what he had to say

I’ve just ordered by Expert Secrets book but I was lucky enough to get my hands on the first three chapters. WoW!… I mean Wow! I’m completely blown away even after reading the first couple of chapters. Concepts and ideas that I had never heard before. I’d be doing a dis-service to Russell if I was to try and explain some of these concepts. However, if I don’t even touch upon even a few, I’d be doing you a dis-service and you won’t be encouraged to read this information yourself.

I’ll explain how one of these concepts has impacted me and the way I think about life. Raised in a Buddhist household where you’re encouraged as a child to love and be friends with everyone. At least that was my understanding. In my early 20s, I discovered that this wasn’t the case at all. What you’re supposed to do is actively engage in friends people who are positive, loving and generally a good influence in your life. The other side of the coin is you were supposed to actively disengage from association with people who bring you down and those who are not a good influence on your life. Putting aside the whole religious aspect, this fundamentally makes sense right.

Associate with good people, Don’t associate with the bad.

Not really rocket science but for some reason, it was an eye opener. This was the first time in my life where I consciously made an effort to cut the negative people out of my life. Boy, did it make a difference? You bet ya!

The Prolific Index

The second turning point was when I learnt the concept of creating polarity from Russell Brunson. In the book, Expert Secrets he refers to this as Prolific Index. Again, Russell explains this brilliantly. However, in a nutshell, the mainstream video or as I like to call it, follow the sheep is in the middle. When you ask someone about a topic, they never really tell you how they actually feel. It’s always a generic answer where the person is happy to sit on the fence. The majority of the world consist of these people. I certainly was one of them for a very long time. On the ends of this are the crazies. They’re always good for a laugh but they are so far right or so far left, it’s really hard to take them seriously. These people seem to lack objectivity and clarity or even a hint of seeing reality. As a result, they’re labelled the crazies. However, somewhere in between crazy and mainstream is a beautiful sweet spot known as Prolific. You’re still going to upset people, however, there’ll be a good proportion of people who will love you more than ever for having that view. It creates enough controversy and buzz to make an impact. The diet niche would a great example. If we use the say the Bullet Proof diet, there’s a lot of information there that really contradicts the conventional thinking. However, most of it is backed up by research and client testimonials. The very fact that it create

s controversy has an effort to attract people. Hence, the sweet spot. Most importantly, if you’re in a business this is where the money is!

What is ClickFunnels?

In its simplicity, ClickFunnels is a page builder. More specifically, it’s a Funnel Builder on steroids. If you don’t know what a Funnel is, that’s okay. I’ll explain this a bit later. Some of these people may already have toothpaste that they’re using and are happy with, that’s fine. Why use ClickFunnels over a Traditional Website builder

Imagine you have a product to sell or you have a course that you would like to share with the world. How would you do it? The most common approach would be to hire someone or build a website yourself. Building a website yourself can be fairly easy if you use a content management system (CMS) such as Wordpress. However, you’ll still need to buy hosting, connect the name-servers to the domain as well as buy and install relevant plugins. Some of these themes and plugins will be premium ones which will costs anywhere from a couple of dollars to hundreds of dollars. Of course, Wordpress is primarily a blogging platform and not designed for full-fledged sales funnels. You can do this with more premium plugins but it can get a little messy.

The major positive of this layout is that the page is well structured and neat. One negative aspect is that it’s not free-flowing. You can’t simply drag and drop objects into the exact place you want. Instead, you must work within the given framework of Sections (green), Rows (blue) and Elements (orange). Once you’ve played around with the editor for a couple of days, you can have a funnel completed within 10 minutes. Yes, it is super powerful but unbelievably easy and fun to use. This is the reason why even kids love jumping on it.
If I was to describe a competitive product such as Leadpage, Optimized Press, BuilderAll or Convertri, the editor would be its main feature. So in explaining what is Clickfunnels, explaining what the editor does only show one small aspect of Clickfunnels and it’s many other features.

The Membership Section

I’ve explained what is clickfunnels as it’s core but wait, there’s more. It has a membership section. Yes, a fully fledged stylish membership section. I have used many other membership platforms but nothing is easier to setup and more appealing to look at than the membership areas of Clickfunnels. As it’s inbuilt within the framework, integration is simple drag and drop.
Adding in your lessons is very straight-forward.

My Conclusion

Full clickfunnels review of its other features like Actionetics, Backpack and the solid Support Community, I will save for another blog post. Having used many other page and funnel builders, I can honestly say that Clickfunnels delivers on its core product proposition. Every week I get an email saying there’s a new Clickfunnels killer. Yes, some of these page and funnel builders do have many more feature than clickfunnels. However, after reviewing and trialling these software, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that they do not deliver on the fundamentals. The important stuff that we really need to when the first time and every time. There are many SaaS companies who promise the world and produce a mediocre products. Russell Brunson and the team don’t pull any pushes. They’ve brought to the market a platform which anyone, yes anyone can pick and have a product up and running within a matter of minutes. I’m not saying there’s no learning curve. It’s so initiative that you should be fairly proficient within the first week.
Writing a clickfunnels review has been so easy for me to do as this is one of my core products in my tech stack. In fact, it is the heaviest hitter of them all.

Video is such a powerful method to communicate to your audience, it’s a must for all business owners, educators and vloggers. Producing quality impactful videos on a consistent basis can be a challenge for most people. 1. Talking Head – without a script – This is by far my favourite way to create videos on my vlog. All I have to do is put my phone on self-mode, plug in my lapel microphone and start talking about the topic at hand. Of course this is not going to be production quality as there’ll be umms and ahhs but the pro side is it’s done quickly. I’ll option use this approach for doing review videos as well. I personally use Final Cut Pro for editing but any editor that you’re comfortable with is fine to use. There is a steep learning curve with these type of professional software like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. iMovie is a great alternative if you’re on a Mac.

  • Minimum Equipment Required
    • Camera – Professional Video Camera, Smart Phone Camera or Webcam
    • Microphone – Lapel mic or external microphone. In-built mics aren’t the best but if you’re not a budget, it will have to do.
    • Thoughts and Idea of what you want to talk about. Maybe a cue card.

2. Talking Head – with a script – Same as above but with a script. This tends to be a more professional approach with lights, a dedicated camera, tripods and prompter. I have done these videos before and they come out really well. The downside is, you can not pump them out as quickly as going off the cuff.

  • Minimum Equipment Required
    • Camera – Professional Video Camera, Smart Phone Camera or Webcam
    • Microphone – Lapel mic or external microphone. In-built mics aren’t the best but if you’re not a budget, it will have to do.
    • Teleprompter – Though these can be expensive, you can pick one off eBay for about $250.
    • iPad or Andriod Tablet – Install a teleprompting software from the Appstore or GooglePlay.
    • A Script of what you’ll actually say in the video.

3. Video/Whiteboard Animation – Majority of people wanting to create a video will not do this entire process themselves.Instead, they’ll engage in the services of a video specialist freelancer and outsource this entire process. Doing so is not cheap, even if you hire a freelancer. You’re looking at upwards of $200 for a very short animation.

However, In recent years, there has been a number of software which has come into the market that allows you create some fantastic videos with a minimal level of technical skills. Explaindio is one such software which is by far one of the most popular in the market.

Whiteboard animations are an extremely popular way to communicate your message as it keeps the audience visually stimulated. One of my mentors really specialises in not only creating whiteboard animations but also wholesaling sales videos and graphics. Conclusion and my recommendation

ExpressVPN vs PIA – both have its Pros and Cons.

Pro for PIA is its pricing. Super cheap pricing, especially if you go for the 2-year plan. If you’re on a budget and you see the importance of getting a VPN, there’s no question – PIA is the winner.

Con for PIA is that every mother and their dog uses this and it’s basically the no-frills version of VPNs.

Pros for ExpressVPN are its slick application, high speeds and a solid reputation. As I mentioned earlier, there is the added bonus of accessing Netflix from outside the US if you need it.

Con for ExpressVPN would be its pricing. Plain and simple.

Knowing what I know now and having used both services, I would (and still do) use ExpressVPN over PIA. I’d rather pay a bit more for the reliability and robust desktop and mobile application. If you’re strapped for cash, then going with PIA is the best option. It’s certainly far better than nothing at all or god forbid – free VPN! Don’t do it (say it like Arnold Schwarzenegger).
